MY PUBLISHING HISTORY

In my lifetime, so far, I have sold 400,000 units. I explain and show samples of what I have created. It is all about selling information.

WRITING

WHY WRITE E-BOOKS OR P-BOOKS? (A p-book is a paper book, whether soft or hard cover.) Depends on your motive.

MAKING MONEY IS ONE MOTIVE

1)- Your book is an asset, like an income producing property, (as in collecting rent money from rent houses, commercial office buildings; or royalties from oil wells you own). How many of you own rental property in Europe and Asia? You may not be collecting rent money from Europe, but with books you can earn royalties while you sleep from books sold globally. The more books you have selling for you worldwide, the more royalties you earn.

2)- Another motive is to write a book as an IMAGE TOOL — A glorified business card. A Real estate agent wrote a book and gives it away to prospects. It builds trust and educates clients in the real estate field. How could YOU use your book to build credibility and gain more clients?  Another example is a nutritionist can write a “how-to” book with questions and answers about the products or services they provide.

HARD COPY is a term for a physical copy, whether paperback/softcover, or hardback/hardcover, or mass market paperback.

WHAT IS A GHOST WRITER?

An alternative to you writing your own book is to get a ghost writer, who is a professional writer/author. Tell them your story. Your name is on the cover but the real writer is invisible. Help your ghost writer to create an outline, timeline, Table of Contents, key people or characters, and then the writer can fill in the blanks and flesh it out.

HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL WRITER:

Be a visionary. Must have a vision and write it down. Once you “see” it you can create it.

Write a good book the market is craving. Not a “who cares” book that will sit on the bookstore shelf. Help your prospect answer the question he is asking when looking at your book, which is “What’s in it for me?” which stands for the call letters of the most famous radio station…WII-FM.

HOW TO NOT BE SUCCESSFUL

By thinking you know better than the experts; your pride and arrogance and prima-donna complex may end up bad for you; be teachable. (An author I know argued with a B&N expert in NYC telling the author his book would not succeed, and the expert was correct. His book failed miserably.)

HOW TO FIND A HOT TOPIC TO WRITE ABOUT

What is trending? What is on best-sellers list? Go to search engines such as Amazon, Youtube and Google and type in a topic name slowly and see what auto-populates in the drop-down menu. These are the most-searched topics. For my book, “Dad’s War Photos: Adventures in the South Pacific” I did that on Amazon to see who my WWII book competitors are. I did the same for my “Rice Cooker Meals: Fast Home Cooking for Busy People” book too, but found only a couple in 2007. Now there are lots of them on cooking in a rice cooker.

EDITING

Once you write your manuscript, (in MS Word, double-spaced) then perfect it; re-read it and catch all the errors, typos, re-word sentences. Possibly wait a week, and then read it again. Once you feel it is perfected, give it to a professional editor to catch all the mistakes you missed.

PUBLISHER VS PRINTER

If your intention is to write your personal family memories, beliefs, opinions, poems, etc, that is personal, and you want your family to read it and preserve your legacy, then bring it to a copy shop – they’ll print some copies. You can give it away or sell it. That is PRINTED, not PUBLISHED.

A PUBLISHER

… gets your book into the world’s book industry SYSTEM, by filling out all the forms, getting a Library of Congress Catalog Number, assigning an ISBN, bar code, UPC CODE (to sell in supermarkets), copyright, etc. A publisher hires the book printer.

EBOOK

Which way to publish, ebook or hard copy? Why ebook? Ever notice people waiting at a bus stop, etc., and they are all looking down at their smartphones. I call them “Smartphone Zombies.” They make this a new season for ebook writers.

An Ebook is a digital file. When you sell an ebook you are selling electrons! Can order your ebook and have it delivered to you in 30 seconds.

Ebooks are read on an e-reader: computer screen, smartphone, NOOK, KINDLE, tablet, and sold on a variety of seller’s sites such as Diesel, Kobo, Apple, Smashwords, etc.

What price to sell it? A simple text-only novel or poetry will most probably sell for less than a book with lots of photos. See what the ebooks in your genre are selling for.

Some go straight to ebook only and do not do a paper version. First-time authors can do this.

A publisher can avoid the expense of another print run and bring his out-of-print books back to life in ebook form.

SIZE OF PRINT FONT MATTERS – make your book readable

COVER DESIGN

– use a professional book cover designer! There is a difference between book designer vs graphic designer who works at designing flyers, posters, magazine ads. A book designer is in touch with the book trends, the best cover artists and cover photographers, and is skilled at laying out your book.

color interior = more expensive for print books, but not ebooks.

Using photograph or original art? Stock photography can be purchased inexpensively, or use an artist’s work.

WHAT IS THE JOB OF THE BOOK COVER?

The front cover’s job is to attract your prospect’s attention so they pick up the book. The next response is you want them to turn the book over to the back cover. The back cover’s job is supposed to have the sales pitch at the top of the page, to sell the prospect on buying the book.

TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

In traditional publishing, there is a RISK of over-buying, since there is no accurate way to tell how many books should be printed, unless the publisher has been doing this for many years. If you have deceived yourself into thinking there is a huge market for your book (and there really isn’t) and you print 10,000 copies, you are in trouble.

PRINT ON DEMAND (POD)

The alternative is PRINT ON DEMAND, or POD. If you are not sure how your book will sell, print a small quantity instead. With POD the minimum quantity is one copy, because your book is printed on a specialized digital press.

If you publish the book yourself, it takes lots of study on your part. Or find a reputable publisher to do it for you.

AUDIO BOOKS

Have your book made into an audiobook if it turns out to be popular. Cover all the bases for maximum profit.

WHO PROMOTES YOUR BOOK?

The AUTHOR PROMOTES their own book through book signings at bookstores. B&N will order your books, but it’s nice of you to come and help sell them and PUSH THEM out the door; use social media, blog tours, their own website, supermarkets. I sold 21 of my Dad’s War Photos books in one day at a local supermarket. I sold 80 copies of Rice Cooker Meals: Fast Home Cooking for Busy People in two hours at Barnes & Noble by offering a free taste of Black-eye Pea & Sausage Jambalaya cooked in a rice cooker right there in the store. The manager loved me for doing that.
