“Cypress Solitude” is a landscape of a beautiful
cypress swamp. Dad and I fished in the bayous
of the great Atchafalaya Basin. This scene
is typical of what we would see while fishing
in Two O’Clock Bayou and Bayou Courtableu.
I remember majestic cypress trees, the sounds
of birds singing, frogs croaking, white egrets
and herons hunting patiently for fish and
crawfish. Those experiences alone were worth
the trip to the bayou, even if we did not
catch anything. We made so many great memories
together. The peace and serenity that we
experienced through God’s creation brought
an awareness of the Creator to our hearts.

“Boyhood Recollections,” the painting of
the old farmhouse with the rusty, tin roof
in a grassy pasture near a pond was drawn
from my dad’s memories of growing up in
the country west of Opelousas, near Lawtell,
Louisiana. He fondly remembered many fun
times spent visiting his aunts, uncles,
and cousins who lived nearby. While gazing
at this peaceful scene, one is struck by
the awesome beauty of God’s creation. The
beauty of these wide-open spaces sparks
your imagination. You can believe that
this was your retreat… a place to come
away from the cares of your daily life.
You can easily imagine running through
the fields, swimming in the pond, and exploring
in the woods.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of this
life, sometimes we need to take a little
time to simply enjoy the journey by taking
the scenic route. This dirt road in the country
is surrounded by the heart of nature. You
can almost hear the wind whispering through
the trees and feel the sun’s radiance on
your face. This painting represents serenity
for a fleeting moment. The beauty of this
pastoral scene reminds us to let go of the
past, forget our worries about the future,
and embrace the fullness of life as it is
happening now.

“Boyhood
Recollections,” “Cypress Solitude,” and “The
Scenic Route” are oil paintings created by
artist Curtis Bertrand (1920-2000). Mr. Bertrand
discovered his natural talent at the age of
60, his paintings bringing to life the beauty
of our southern Louisiana landscapes. Once
cultivating its soil as a farmer, Curtis later
retired, and then began to capture the beauty
of his birthplace on the canvas. Curtis was
a lifelong resident of St. Landry Parish where
he lived with his wife Edmay and reared their
two children, Neal and Karen. |
The peace, solitude, beauty, and tranquility
contained in these paintings can be yours to
bring into your own home. You can enjoy some
of south Louisiana’s Cajun Country for a lifetime! |
These prints also make great gifts for graduates,
newlyweds, for birthdays and Christmas holidays.
A great gift for that person in your life who
is hard to shop for or who has everything. |
